Thundurus has joined Pokémon Go’s five-star legendary raid rotation. Our Pokémon Go Thundurus raid guide explains Thundurus’ effective moveset, counters, and weaknesses for both of its forms.
Just like the remaining Forces of Nature, Thundurus has two forms: the human-like Incarnate Forme and the bird-like Therian Forme. The Pokémon’s variety doesn’t change between forms, so all these counters should work no matter what. Here’s everything you need to know regarding taking a Snapshot of Thundurus in Pokemon Go.
If you have either the Incarnate Forme or Therian Forme of Thundurus in your collection, you can fast complete this Special Research task by tapping on Thundurus in your collection and then clicking the camera icon on the right side of the screen to open the game’s augmented reality (AR) camera. Once you place Thundurus in the world in front of you, you can take a view to complete this task.
If you don’t have Thundurus in your cluster, you won’t be able to complete this Special Research task until you collect one.
This means you’ll either have to wait for a future event where Thundurus is featured or capture one for your collection. Alternatively, you can trade with another player to add Thundurus to your collection without pausing.
Thundurus Best Counters And Weaknesses
Thundurus is only weak against rock- and ice-type Pokémon, so think using any of the following Thundurus’ best counters and weaknesses:
- Rampardos with SmackDown and Rock Slide
- Mamoswine with Powder Snow and Avalanche
- Tyranitar with SmackDown and Stone Edge
- Rhyperior with SmackDown and Rock Wrecker
If you’re having trouble, remember to use climate boosts to turn the tides in your favor. Rain boosts electric moves, and partly cloudy weather boosts rock-type moves.
Thundurus Best Moveset
Incarnate FormeThundurus isn’t very effective for raiding or for gyms, but you can give it Thunder Shock and Thunder if you want to utilize it.
Therian FormeThundurus is a very effective electric-type attacker when set up with Volt Switch and Thunderbolt.
Thundurus Therian Forme Raid Schedule
Thundurus Therian Forme enters the five-star Raid ring beginning April 5 at 10 AM local time, remaining there until 8 PM on April 12. Unfortunately, the game does not follow any set schedules with its raids–there’s no guarantee Thundurus will be charging into a gym for a battle–but the game constantly tells you who’s around to raid, so just hold an eye out.
There is one hope for those who require a Thundurus Therian Forme appearance though: Pokemon Go’s weekly Raid Hour on Wednesday nights. The Raid Hour event on April 6–running from 6 PM to 7 PM local time–will feature the Bolt Strike Pokemon at almost every Gym in the game. If you want a guaranteed shot at Thundurus Therian Forme, assemble your friends and head out after dinner on April 6.
Thundurus Therian Forme and Counters
Thundurus Therian Forme is an Electric- and Flying-type Pokemon, a combination that does not have many drawbacks. In fact, only two of Pokemon’s 18 types will do extra damage to this beast, so it’s imperative to know what those are and plan accordingly.
Ice- and Rock-type Pokemon are the only two Pokemon types with activities that will deal extra damage to Thundurus Therian Forme. Unfortunately, the only Pokemon in presence with that dual-typing, Generation VI’s Aurorus, isn’t in Pokemon Go yet, so you’ll have to get creative with your team. AlolanNinetales is a reliable choice for this raid. This is because it’s a powerful attacker with no weakness to Thundurus’s attacks. Beartic, Lycanroc, Sudowoodo, and two of the three Regis in Regirock and Regice will also make appropriate choices.
Types to Avoid
Thundurus has triple the number of resistances that it has drawbacks, meaning one-third of all Pokemon types will do reduced damage in the heat of battle. Bug-, Fighting-, Flying-, Grass-, Ground-, and Steel-type Pokemon are all powerless against Thundurus’s Electric- and Flying-type barrage, so do not bring any Pokemon or use any attacks of those types and you should be home free.
There’s still some time before Thundurus Therian Forme joins the five-star raid roster, so get yourself ready by taking on the existing five-star raid TapuLele or the Mega Charizard Y Mega Raid if you haven’t accomplished so already.
